Heya all,
Got brand new HP DL 360 G6 server for my project ( secret for now ), and I installed Ubuntu server edition on it.. all in all is fine
I have used 4x Seagate 500G ST9500420ASG disks, which are not HP disks, lets face it HP disks are insanely expensive !
I have payed 214,52 € for 4x disk + 27,96 € for 3 years warranty
HP disks: same SATA 1x HDD = 194.2 € 1year warranty == for 4x HDD 776.8 € !!!
776.8 € is half of the price of brand new server.
Everything working fine even HP support CD tools were no problem on Ubuntu 10.10 ( installed the one for 10.04 i think )
There is one issue, it is the damn HP Bios FW, it is not happy with Non-HP disks what it is doing is giving this error:
LOG: POST Error: 1717-Slot X Drive Array – The Following Drive(s) Are Reporting an Overheated Condition:
This is caused by Bios unable to read temperature from disk, this Seagate 500G ST9500420ASG disks don’t have thermal sensors so servers FANs are going nuts and at 80% all the time… and there is no freaking way to control it .
This issue occurs on multiple types of disks, maybe one way to control it to “mod” the fans a little and install potentiometer and turn the fans down manually….
If you have any suggestion how else it can be deal with, leave a comment.
Regard,
VladoPortos
